Description
French explorers and traders called Big Sable Point, Grande Pointe au Sable. It was in a treacherous stretch of Lake Michigan. Twelve ships were wrecked in that area in 1855. In 1866, Congress appropriated $35,000 for a lighthouse which was built the following year.
The black and white tower is 112 feet high. The residence now houses three families. Today the station no longer has a light keeper. Everything is fully automated.
